Golden Week

Golden Week is the first week in May, and almost everyone has the whole week off work. Which means everything is busy, and sometimes more expensive. A lot of people tend to go out of town (Bali, Thailand, Seoul, etc) for a week-long vacation.

We decided not to go out of town, since we've only been here for a few months, and just relax. But today, we went to Nagoya Castle and walked around the grounds. We didn't go into the main castle, as Matt's knees were hurting, but there was plenty to see outside the castle.

Getting there: Subway train to Shiyakusho Station, on the Meijo Line (Exit 7 will take you right to the front gate.)

On the walk into the castle grounds, we stopped to eat at Orympia Cafe. The food was quite good, however if we'd known, there were several food vendors inside the castle grounds.
We also passed a few stall vendors who were selling crafts. This lady hand makes all of her wares, and Ashton bought a wooden turtle from her.

Into the castle grounds, and I found a stall that caught my fancy. A lady named Izumi was spinning wool into yarn. She and her husband had several crafts that were available for purchase. I purchased a fridge magnet, which was a sheep carved from wood, and then some hand-spun yarn to create the sheep's wool. Super cute!

I won't go and show you all the lovely photos we took of the castle and grounds, because you should really come and see it for yourself. Also, the photos you find online are going to be much better than my poor efforts. But here are some photos of my guys exploring the grounds, which is so much nicer!

Inside the Hommaru Palace (where, of course, you had to take your shoes off), there were signs saying to "Mind Your Head". Ashton wasn't too far off knocking his head on the beams by accident.

This camellia (which happens to be one of my favourites) was grafted from the original camellia tree that stands by the Hommoru Palace. The original tree is still alive, though it was burnt badly during the air raids of 1945.

The stones behind Matt, Ashton and Declan here are original foundation stones from the main castle.

This amazing tree was an opportunity too great to pass up. Perfect for two brothers!

And what kind of day would it be without a silly photo...

Kon'nichiwa, irasshai!

Kon'nichiwa, irasshai! (Hello and welcome!)

The House of Krause has officially relocated to Nagoya, Japan, for the next 3-5 years! (Give or take...) We have been here for almost 4 months now, and life in Japan is starting to make a bit more sense.

There have been several earthquakes through Japan in the last few weeks, which you may have seen on the news. Thankfully, none of these have been in our area. While we have been told that Nagoya is a "safe area" as far as major earthquakes and tsunamis, we have also been told that the location of the recent multiple earthquakes was also considered a "safe area". But life lived in fear of possible disaster is not living at all. And so, daily life continues!

Last night, we were blessed to find an amazing restaurant, quite close to us. (2 train stations and a 10 minute walk away...) Tiger Lily BarBQ Market is a family friendly American-style barbecue restaurant, opened by a Japanese surfer named Takeshima Yasunori, who moves around the restaurant with a big smile on his face. And for good reason. His BBQ is good. Very good.

Matt ordered the Texas BBQ Beef Brisket, the smoked bacon, and the pulled pork, along with some chili cheese fries. I ordered a "halfback" of babyback ribs, an order of 5 fried lollipop chicken drumsticks, and a mountain of crinkle cut fries with sour cream and sweet chili sauce for dipping. Ashton ordered a DOUBLE TigerLily burger (which I seriously could not have finished, but he powered through and claimed to still be hungry), Declan had a single TigerLily burger, and they shared another mountain of crinkle cut fries.

Everything was delicious. Including the T.Y.Harbor Brewing Company "Imperial Stout" that Matt and I shared, crafted in Tokyo. It was sent to our table by Yasunori-san, and he took great joy in our reactions.

As we left, Ashton told Yasunori-san that the food was "Totemo, totemo, totemo oishi desu!" ("It is very, very, very delicious!")

(I'm having trouble getting the photos to upload, but as soon as I can, I will post them.)
